The photo placed first in the “Urban & Extreme” category, with two outdoor Climbing photos also receiving honourable mentions.
The photo of a Speed climber competing at the Olympic Qualifier Series Budapest 2024 won gold at this year’s edition of the World Sports Photography Awards, the biggest and most prestigious sports photography competition, judged by senior international authorities from brands, media, photography, and sport.
The winning photo – titled “Icarus” – was taken by Hungarian photographer Marton Monus, and features the silhouette of a female Speed climber racing up the 15-metre wall.
Two more outdoor Climbing photos earned an honourable mention in the same category.
Across six editions of the World Sports Photography Awards, thousands of professional and semi-professional photographers from around the world have submitted their photo free-of-charge, building a database of more than 22,000 images in 24 sports categories.
