IFSC ANNOUNCES NEW SUSTAINABILITY PLAN AHEAD OF 2025 SEASON

The IFSC and its Sustainability Working Group has launched its future plan laying down five key areas of focus in the years ahead.

With the new plan, the IFSC solidifies its commitment to fostering a sustainable environment, both through the reduction of its carbon footprint and the promotion of equity, well-being, and best practices in the workplace and at events.

Guided by key initiatives, performance indicators, and principles, the IFSC Sustainability Working Groupdecided to draw inspiration from the pillars of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) outlined by the United Nations to formulate the plan.

The IFSC Sustainability Working Group, comprising of IFSC Vice President Wolfgang Wabel, IFSC General Director Piero Rebaudengo, IFSC Sport Operations Manager and Sustainability Officer Federico Ferro, President of the Estonian Climbing Federation Kristiina Toots, and IFSC Athlete Representative Campbell Harrison is prioritising five SDG objectives that resonate most strongly with the values and responsibilities of a modern sport organisation.

The five goals at the heart of the plan are:

  1. Good Health and well-being
  2. Gender equality
  3. Responsible consumption and production
  4. Climate action
  5. Partnerships for the goals

Included in the plan – which can be found in full here – the IFSC includes actions and partnerships to reaffirm its commitment to integrating sustainability into all aspects of its operations through these initiatives.

In line with previous years, the IFSC also off-set its carbon footprint with a Voluntary CO₂ cancellation payment through the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change.

The number of units cancelled for 2024 by the payment was 4,160 CERs, which is equivalent to 4,160 tonne(s) of CO₂.
