IFSC President Marco Maria Scolaris this week visited Tokyo’s Aomi Urban Sports Park, Sport Climbing’s venue for the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020, confirming that the Japanese city is ready to host the Games in just a few weeks’ time.
Alongside IFSC Vice President Kobinata Toru, Sport Climbing Technical Delegates Christophe Billon and Jérôme Meyer, and IFSC Olympic & Multi-Sport Games Officer Hazel (Haesol) Han, President Scolaris paid one final visit to the venue ahead of Sport Climbing’s Olympic debut later this month. The IFSC delegation was given a walk-through of the venue by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and Tokyo 2020 team, checking the Sport Climbing competition and warm up walls, the athletes’ area, and sport equipment to be used during Games time. Meetings were also held with Olympic Broadcasting Services on broadcasting operations, with further discussions surrounding sport presentation operations.
As 2021 marks 30 years since Japan’s first Sport Climbing competition, this is a special year for the sport to make its first summer Olympic appearance in Tokyo. The climbing community is excited for the Games to begin on July 23, and the IFSC offers its sincerest thanks to the IOC and Tokyo 2020 for their support in preparing for our sport’s long anticipated Olympic premiere. With the venue complete and all COVID protocols in place, Tokyo is ready to host a safe and secure Olympic Games for not only participants, but also the people of Japan.
