Medals will be decided tomorrow at the IFSC Para Climbing World Cup Arco
The climbers still left with a shot at the final IFSC Para Climbing World Cup medals of the year were set today in Arco, Italy with qualification complete across the 17 sport classes.
USA’s Emeline Lakrout made the final in the women’s B1 sport class, but she nearly didn’t even make it to Italy: “It was fabulous today. It was nerve-wracking, but we got out there, we had some travel troubles on the way so being here at all is a win.
“We left New York and about 45 minutes in the pilot told us we had a mechanical issue, and we turned around. Then the airline told us there was nothing they could do to get us here, but we found a bit of an obscure airline. We were on the road for about 24 hours, and we made it at midnight last night. So straight into it. But I thrive off the chaos so I can take it.”
Reflecting on her season Lakrout said: “This competition season has been super long, so I have been in training mode for nine months at this point, so in some ways it’s the final triumphant push. It’s always stressful training for comps. Training muscle, technique, trying to find the right holds I the gym. But then you don’t want to build muscle four weeks before, so at what point do you stop. Strength training, recovery. There’s a lot to balance there.”
As one of the remaining few with a hope of a medal, Lakrout said: “The goal is always gold. We only recently formed a class in B1 and so that was an exciting time and for a lot of us it was our first medals, but now we are past the novelty now of getting on the podium and we try to see what we can really do and see what happens.”
